What is this a picture of?

The effect has a name most people who've spent time around tattoos already know: a blowout. It shows up as ink that has migrated sideways under the surface, softening a line's edge into a spread rather than keeping it as a clean boundary.

Why does it happen to one edge and not the others?

Because it's a question of what's underneath that particular stretch of line, not a flaw in the drawing itself.

Ink sits at a certain depth to read as a clean line; put it too shallow, or put it somewhere the surface underneath is thinner or looser, and it has room to travel sideways instead of staying put. That's a property of the surface at that spot, and surfaces aren't uniform — a stretch that's thinner or more mobile in one direction lets a line drift there while an adjacent stretch, on firmer ground, holds its edge. The three sharp edges of this square and the one soft one are sitting on different surfaces, even though the ink went in as one continuous line.

Does it mean the whole design failed?

No — three of the four edges are still doing exactly what they were drawn to do. A blowout is local. It changes the read of one edge, not the identity of the shape.

Which drawing choices make a blowout less noticeable?

A heavier line to begin with, and fewer other lines running close alongside it.

A thin line has almost no margin: any sideways spread reads immediately, because there was so little width there to begin with. A heavier line can lose the same amount of spread and still read as a clean, if slightly softer, edge. The same margin argument governs how fine a design can go before fabric loses it too — thin strokes are the ones with nothing in reserve, on skin or on cloth. Parallel lines make it worse in a different way: three concentric squares packed close together have narrow gaps that a blowout can bridge, merging two lines where they were meant to stay distinct. Fewer, wider-spaced lines give a spread somewhere to go without touching its neighbour.

Is this something to worry about before getting a design made?

It's worth knowing about, which is different from worth worrying about — this piece is about the drawing decision, not the aftercare that follows a real appointment.

Whether a given line spreads or not depends on things a drawing can't control for in advance. What a drawing can control is how much margin it leaves — heavier lines and wider gaps simply have more room to absorb it if it happens.

Who owns a description of an effect like this?

Nobody — a blowout is a physical effect with a common name, not anybody's design or technique.

Does it print well?

One ink, soft black, with the haze rendered as a genuine gradient rather than a hard shape — which is the one place this design asks more of a print than most others in this set. A hard gradient prints as a flat band; a wide, soft one goes muddy on fabric fast, so the feathered edge here reads cleanest kept small, with the three crisp edges kept as solid, confident lines. The contrast between clean and spread is the whole point, so the three sharp edges have to read as unmistakably sharp.
