The barrel goes on before the solder, or never again

The barrel is on the cable before the tip touches anything. That's the whole instruction.

What is this shirt actually showing?

A single moment inside repairing a lead: a plug's outer barrel slid out of the way, and an iron about to join a wire to a terminal.

Everything outside the two hands is left out of frame on purpose. There's no bench visible, no wider workshop, no context beyond the two objects actually in contact — because the moment being drawn is small and specific, not a scene of somebody working.

Why does the barrel have to go on first?

Because once the wires are soldered to the terminals inside the plug, the assembly is wider than the hole the barrel screws over.

Solder a joint and try to slide the barrel on afterwards and it won't clear the terminals — the wires splay slightly under the solder, the terminal lugs stick out, and there's no way to compress either one back down small enough to pass through. The barrel has exactly one window to go on, and it's before the iron touches anything.

Why is this the mistake almost everyone makes once?

Because the barrel looks like a housing you screw on at the end, the way a lid goes on a jar after it's filled, and that instinct is backwards for this particular object.

Nobody's taught the order; most people work it out by getting to the last step, finding a bare soldered joint and an unthreaded barrel sitting uselessly beside it, and starting again with a new plug. It's a cheap mistake in materials and an expensive one in time, which is exactly the kind of error that only needs to happen once.

Can a real connector's markings go on a shirt like this one?

A specific connector maker's branding, part number or plug design belongs to them, and licensable the ordinary way if that particular connector is the point of the print.

Nothing on this hand-drawn pair is a manufacturer's mark — a plug, a barrel, a cable and an iron are generic objects doing a generic job, and the mechanism they're demonstrating belongs to nobody. The patch bay these leads eventually plug into carries the same kind of numbering rather than any maker's identity, for the same reason.

Does this order-of-operations idea show up anywhere else in audio gear?

Constantly, because most connectors are built the same way: an outer shell that has to go on before the inner joint is made, not after.

A modular synth's patch cords don't have this particular trap, since their connectors are moulded rather than soldered by hand, but the underlying idea — that some assemblies only work in one order — is common to soldered connectors in general, from a jack plug to an XLR to the socket on the back of a microphone's own grille.

Isn't a mistake a strange thing to put on a chest?

Only if it reads as a failure rather than as knowledge earned the hard way.

Everybody who solders leads for a living has done this once, and everybody who hasn't yet will do it eventually. A shirt that shows the correct order isn't showing off — it's the kind of small, specific competence that only looks obvious after the first ruined plug taught it to you.

Does it print well?

Yes — two hands and two tools at close range give the artwork plenty of solid shape to work with.

Orange for the curl of smoke keeps it the one warm accent against cream linework, which is enough to draw the eye to the iron without needing a third colour. Slate blue as a ground holds both inks without either one washing out, and the smoke stays a simple curved line rather than trying to render anything soft — a wide soft gradient goes grey and muddy on fabric in a way a hard line never does.
