Every second loop turns the other way

What is this, exactly?
A coiling method, drawn as the shape it leaves rather than as a diagram of the technique.
Anyone who has wound a garden hose or an extension lead the same direction every single time knows the result: a coil that springs into a tangle the moment it hits the ground. Over-under is the fix a theatre electrician and a broadcast rigger both arrived at, because both of them coil the same cable hundreds of times a season and neither has patience for a fight with it.
Why does turning every second loop the other way work?
Because a cable wound the same direction every time stores a twist it never sheds.
Coil clockwise once and the cable takes on a quarter-turn of twist. Coil it clockwise again and it takes another. Keep going and the cable accumulates a memory of rotation built into it, and that memory is what makes a badly coiled cable leap off the floor in kinks the second it's released. Alternating the direction — over, then under, then over again — puts a twist in one direction immediately followed by the opposite twist. They cancel out. The cable holds no memory at all, and it pays out in a straight line instead of a fight.
What actually separates a good coil from a bad one?
Loop size and hand tension, and both come from the length of cable rather than a fixed rule.
A short cable wants tighter loops than a long one — fifteen metres wound in loops the size of a bin lid is awkward to carry and slow to throw. Too loose and the coil migrates underfoot the moment somebody walks past it, the same problem a sandbag at the foot of a boom stand solves for something that doesn't coil at all. The tape wrap is worth marking with the length, because an unlabelled coil gets picked up, checked end to end, and put down again by whoever needs fifteen metres and not ten.
Can a real cable length or connector brand go on a shirt?
The coiling method belongs to nobody — it's a physical fact about rotation, not anyone's invention.
A connector maker's own branding is a different matter, and licensable the ordinary way if a real one is the point of the design. 15M here is invented, standing in for whatever length the actual cable is; there's no reason to borrow a real manufacturer's mark to say what a length of cable already says for itself.
Does the same coil turn up outside a theatre?
Constantly. Anyone who works a cable for a living has usually been taught this exact method by somebody standing over their shoulder.
An electrician coiling flex on a job does it for the same reason a stagehand does — a bad coil costs time on the next call-out. A sound department a few doors down runs the same cable through a patch bay rather than a drum, which is a different problem with the same enemy: a cable that won't lie down.
Isn't a coiled cable the same idea as a coiled rope?
Close, but the twist a rope stores behaves differently from the twist a cable stores, and the fix only looks identical.
A rope is laid or braided, so its coiling method has to respect that construction. A cable is round and uniform along its length, so the over-under method works on any length of it, from a two-metre patch lead to a hundred-metre snake. The visual is close enough that both trades recognise the other's shirt on sight, which is its own small pleasure.
Does it print well?
Yes — flat overlapping ovals with hard edges are close to ideal artwork.
The alternation only reads if the opened loop stays legible, so that one loop wants slightly more line weight than its neighbours rather than more colour. Flat shapes with hard edges are the artwork that survives fabric best, and olive with cream and one accent ink keeps the coil reading as a coil rather than a pile.
