A design over a joint is drawn twice, once for each state

Anything over an elbow or a knee has to survive being folded shut, which is why certain shapes recur on joints and rigid grids don't.

Why does a design over a joint need two versions?

Because a joint has two states, and a design that only accounts for one of them only reads correctly half the time.

An elbow or a knee bent looks nothing like an elbow or a knee straight — the skin over it compresses, folds and stretches unevenly depending on the angle. A tattoo placed there gets seen in both states constantly, arm bent typing, arm straight at rest, and a design that was only checked against the straight version can look broken the moment the joint closes.

What actually happens to the shape geometrically when the joint closes?

The surface it's drawn on gets shorter in one direction and wider in another, and the drawing has to already contain a version of itself that survives that.

A joint closing doesn't stretch the skin evenly in every direction — it compresses along the fold and pushes width out to either side of it, the way the moth's body shortens into a stub while its wings spread wider rather than simply shrinking. A motif drawn without that in mind gets crushed unpredictably; one drawn with it folds into a second, still-legible version of itself.

What kind of shapes survive that and what kind don't?

Shapes with give in their own structure survive; a rigid grid or a perfect circle doesn't.

A moth's wing, a flower's petal, a wave, anything already built from soft, uneven forms can absorb a fold without losing what makes it recognisable — the compression just reads as the wing catching the light differently. A tight geometric grid or a perfect circle has no slack in it: fold either one and it stops being a grid or a circle, it becomes a visibly wrong version of one. That's a matter of geometry, not of one motif being more suited to a joint spiritually than another.

Is that the whole reason certain motifs recur on elbows and knees?

Mostly, yes — it's a practical filter more than a taste.

Moths, spiders, flowers with irregular petals, small creatures with legs that can bend independently of the body: these turn up on joints again and again because they were tested against this exact problem by generations of people wearing them, and they held up. It isn't that geometric motifs are forbidden on a joint — a small, contained geometric mark can sit just to the side of the fold rather than across it, the way a repeating band chooses where its own seam falls rather than pretending it has none.

Does anyone own a motif like this moth, or the two-state way of drawing it?

No — the moth is a classic flash subject and the fold technique is shared method, neither of them belongs to one person.

A moth with spread wings sits in the same open tradition as a swallow or a rose, and drawing it twice to check how it survives a fold is a technique any tattooer working joints has reason to use, not a signature move. What's owned is a specific artist's specific drawing of it — this wing shape, these markings, this exact pair of states — and copying that pair stroke for stroke is copying their work rather than using shared vocabulary.

Does the same logic apply to a garment print, where nothing actually folds?

Yes, because a shirt moves too, even without a joint underneath it.

A print sitting over a shoulder, an elbow-length sleeve or anywhere fabric bunches when an arm bends answers the same question a tattoo over a joint does: a rigid grid printed straight across a seam or a fold line will visibly warp the first time the wearer moves, while a shape with irregular give in its own silhouette keeps reading as itself. The diagram's two states are a design tool worth borrowing even where there's no real joint, only cloth that moves like one.

Does this only matter for a design that will actually sit on an elbow or knee?

No — anywhere a print crosses a natural fold in the garment benefits from the same check.

A side seam, a sleeve hem, the crease where a sleeve meets the body: these all fold repeatedly in wear the way a joint does, and a design crossing one of them is worth checking in both states before committing to it, the same way a design placed somewhere that will need short sittings is composed around that from the start rather than worked out afterwards.

Does a two-state design print well?

Yes, provided the compression lines stay part of the linework rather than becoming a separate texture.

Dense black, as on this moth, is one of the more forgiving choices for print — the compressed side holds its shape as a solid mass rather than needing fine internal detail to survive being squashed. The compression lines themselves print best kept few and clearly spaced rather than fine and close-set, since tight parallel hatching is exactly the kind of detail that fills in against a solid ground.
