The drop happens before you decide to make it

Why does the pointer move before anyone chooses to move it?
Because the drop is a reflex, not a decision made and then executed.
The hand finds the dial and turns it the moment a door opens or a voice is heard on the stairs, often before the person doing it could explain why. It isn't weighed the way choosing a track is weighed. It's closer to flinching. The design puts a gap between two fixed positions rather than one pointer in motion, because a reflex doesn't happen gradually — it happens, complete, in the time it takes to notice someone arrived.
What does the gap between the two positions actually measure?
How much of the record you were willing to let the room hear.
The distance from the solid pointer to the ghost is the actual content of the drawing, not the number either position lands on. A small gap means the volume was already low and being careful about it. A gap this wide, most of the dial's face, means the first position was set for an empty house and the second is for whoever just came in. The two marks together are a measurement nobody would ever write down, but everybody who has lived with other people can read at a glance.
The direction is downward, not upward
The arrow travels from the higher position to the lower one, anticlockwise, ending at the ghost. This is a drop, drawn as a drop. A dial doesn't need a needle mid-motion to show change — two positions and one curved line between them is enough, and the direction that curve takes is the entire statement.
Why does the drawing need two positions instead of one?
A single dial position says nothing about behaviour, only about a number.
Print a dial sitting at one setting and it tells you where a knob happened to be. Print two positions with an arrow between them and it tells you something happened — a change, made for a reason the picture doesn't need to spell out. The second position is what turns this into a design about a habit rather than a design about a setting.
How is this different from the note pushed under a door?
That's a request arriving from outside the room. This is what happens inside it, on its own.
A note asking for quiet after a certain hour is one person's listening bumping into another's tolerance, negotiated in writing because a knock felt like too much. The dial here doesn't involve a second party at all — the volume drops because someone arrived, not because anyone asked. One is a boundary set from outside; the other is a habit already trained in before anyone had to ask for it.
Does this connect to listening that only happens with the door shut?
They're close to opposite conditions of the same habit.
A record played only when the house is empty is the solid pointer's whole context — nobody to turn it down for yet. The ghost pointer is what that same listening becomes the moment that stops being true. Put the two designs side by side and they read as before and after of the same afternoon.
Do I need permission to print a volume dial like this?
No — a dial face like this one is a generic control, not anyone's trademarked design.
A specific manufacturer's exact knob shape, logo or typeface is theirs to license, the same as any other product design. A plain rotary dial with numbers around its edge belongs to no one in particular — it's a shape most people who've owned a stereo already recognise, which is exactly why an invented one works better here than a copy of a real one would.
What's the difference between turning it down and sharing it instead?
One keeps the sound in the room and shrinks it. The other takes it out of the room entirely.
Two people splitting one pair of earphones solves the same underlying problem a different way — instead of adjusting how much a second person hears, it removes the room from the equation altogether. The dial is the compromise you reach for when leaving the room isn't practical; the shared cable is what you reach for when it is.
Does it print well?
Yes — one dial face in flat tones, a solid pointer, a ghosted outline and a single curved arrow.
The solid pointer wants a hard fill and the ghost wants a thin outline only, so the contrast between where it sits now and where it sat before survives at fabric's coarser resolution. The arrow should stay one clean stroke rather than a fading trail — a soft gradient like that is exactly what goes grey and muddy on cloth. Near black with pale grey numerals is a one-ink print; a second ink on the solid pointer alone adds emphasis without adding complexity.
