The few degrees a house runs warmer than it ever runs

The pointer shows where the house is set now. The arc is the only part of the drawing that shows it used to sit somewhere else.
Why draw an arc instead of just showing the pointer at 20?
Because a pointer only shows a position, and the fact worth printing here is a move.
A dial photographed sitting at 20 tells you nothing about where it started. The arc supplies that — sweeping up from around 15 — so the print is recording a change rather than a reading. That's a harder thing for a static object to say, and it's the reason the design exists: the house is being run differently for a few days, not just kept warm.
What does a few degrees on a dial actually cost?
Not much on the bill, and rather more in the small daily adjustments nobody mentions.
A house held a few degrees warmer for several days means windows that don't get opened, a jumper left in the wardrobe, a radiator running through the afternoon instead of switching off between meals. None of it gets discussed. It's set once, near the start of the stay, and left there.
What makes a good version of this design — how far should the arc run?
As far as the actual adjustment, not the whole face of the dial.
An arc sweeping the full scale reads as decoration. One that runs a specific, modest span — a few marks, not the whole rim — reads as a fact about one particular change, which is the thing worth printing. The width of the arc is the entire content of the drawing; get that proportion right and the rest of the dial can stay plain.
Does printing a thermostat dial raise any rights question?
No — a bare dial with a scale and no maker's name identifies no manufacturer and copies no product.
The ticks, the numerals and the pointer are a generic instrument face, the same shape thousands of household dials share. A design that instead reproduced one particular manufacturer's exact face — its own typeface, its branded knob — would be a different question, and the permission for that would need to be sought rather than assumed. This one carries no such mark.
Does this only work for a thermostat?
No — anything in a house that gets reset for the length of a stay works the same way. The extra milk bought in by the pint is the same instinct done with a shopping trip instead of a dial, and a clock running to two different mornings under one roof is a schedule doing what this dial does with heat.
Isn't turning the heat up for a few days a bit much?
Not against what it's actually buying, which is one visitor not spending four days cold in somebody else's house.
Feeling the cold differently between two people isn't a preference to be argued out — it's a physical fact, and the cheapest way to handle it is the dial, not a conversation about jumpers. The arc just records that somebody decided this without being asked twice — unlike a stain a visitor spots in a corner nobody else still sees, this one isn't fixing anything. It's just comfort, offered before it's requested.
Does it print well?
Yes — a ring of fine ticks and a numerals-and-pointer face are hard-edged line work, and that survives at any size a chest print is likely to run.
Keep the dial itself to one dark ink and reserve the accent colour for the arc alone. The arc is the one part of the drawing that needs to read from across a room; everything else can stay quieter than it.
