A tuning fork's number is an agreement, not a fact

The tines point straight up. The stem runs off the bottom edge rather than ending inside the frame. A small stamped 440 sits on the stem, the only mark on the whole design.

It looks like the most exact object anyone could print on a shirt. The number is a decision, not a measurement of anything fixed.

What does a tuning fork actually do?

It vibrates at one steady rate and holds it, however hard it's struck.

Strike either tine and the fork bends the same small amount and springs back, over and over, at a rate set entirely by its own length, thickness and the metal it's cut from — not by how hard it was hit. A harder strike makes it louder, not sharper or flatter. That steadiness, independent of force, is the entire reason it exists: a reference that can't be knocked out of tune by an unsteady hand.

Why print the number rather than the shape of the sound it makes?

Because the number is the part that gets agreed on, and the shape follows automatically from it.

A fork built to a given rate will always produce the same rate, so once the number is fixed the sound is settled too. What varies, historically, is the number itself — orchestras across different countries and different decades have tuned to different reference points, some sharper than 440, and some still do. The stamp on a fork is a snapshot of whichever agreement was current when it was cut.

So is 440 a physical constant or a chosen one?

Chosen. A room of people settled on it as a common reference, and instrument makers built to match.

Nothing about the physics of sound requires that particular rate — a fork cut slightly longer or shorter would ring just as steadily at a different one. What makes 440 useful isn't correctness, it's that enough people agreed to build and tune against the same fixed point, so that instruments made in different workshops end up compatible with each other.

Why does the stem run off the bottom of the print instead of ending?

Because a fork isn't complete as an object on its own — it only works held.

Drawn whole and floating, it would read as a specimen. Cut off at the stem, the print implies the hand that isn't shown: pressed to a soundboard, held against a tooth to check it's still ringing, gripped while the tines are struck against something. The fork does nothing by itself sitting on a bench.

Can a real note or frequency go on the shirt?

Yes without qualification — a number on a reference standard belongs to nobody.

A frequency is a measurement, and nobody owns a measurement any more than they own the number of minutes in an hour. What a specific instrument maker could own is their own stamp's typeface or their fork's particular casting shape, not the number itself. Left generic, as this one is, the print carries the agreement rather than any one company's version of it.

Isn't a single number too plain a subject for a print this size?

The plainness is the point — a busier version would be showing off something the object doesn't have.

A tuning fork has one job and does it without variation, which is exactly what makes it different from a snare hit's waveform, all spike and decay. Filling the same chest space with one clean shape and one small number is accurate to what the object actually is, not a simplification of something more complicated.

Does it print well?

Very — one large outline and four digits is about as clean as a print gets.

Charcoal on white keeps the tines sharp at the tips, which is where a softer line would round off and stop reading as metal. Keep the 440 small and set into the stem rather than floating beside it, the way the marks on a metronome's own scale sit on the instrument rather than above it.
