A snare hit's waveform is the sound, not a picture of it

A waveform isn't drawn from imagination. It's a spike where the stick lands and a smooth decaying band after it — a measurement of one hit, plotted rather than illustrated.

Nothing here was drawn from memory of what a drum sounds like. It's a plot of one specific hit, the way a heart monitor plots one specific beat.

What is actually printed here — a drawing, or a reading?

A reading. The line is the air pressure at a microphone, measured many times a second and plotted.

Every point along the width of the print is a moment in time; the height of the line at that point is how far the air pressure moved from resting, up or down, at that instant. It's closer kin to a photograph than to an illustration — nobody sketched the shape they thought a snare hit should have. The shape is what one actually did.

Why a spike first, then a slow fade, instead of a repeating pattern?

Because a struck drum has two separate physical events, not one continuous vibration.

The spike is the stick landing — sudden and short, most of the height in the whole print concentrated into a sliver of its width. Everything after it is the shell and the snares underneath giving that energy back as sound, dying away smoothly rather than cutting off, which is what makes the shape read as a drum rather than as a click or a clap. A sound with no fade, all spike, wouldn't need a waveform this wide to draw at all.

Why is the shape symmetric above and below the centre line?

Because air pressure moves both above and below normal, and the line is tracking both directions at once.

A struck drumhead pushes air outward on the way down and pulls it back on the rebound, so the pressure at a microphone doesn't just rise — it swings past resting in both directions, over and over, fading each time. Mirroring the shape above and below the line isn't a stylistic choice. It's what happens physically each time the head moves.

Does the recording behind a waveform belong to someone, even if the shape doesn't?

The general shape of a hit belongs to nobody. A specific captured recording is a different matter.

A spike followed by a decay is what any struck drum produces — that pattern is physics, not property. What can be owned is one particular performance captured at one particular moment: a specific drummer's specific hit, released as a recording. Built from a generic strike rather than a lifted sample, the print stays what it looks like: a picture of the physics, not somebody else's captured work.

Does this work for a hit other than a snare?

Any short, percussive sound produces the same kind of shape — a fast rise, then a decay.

A kick drum, a hand clap, a single spoken syllable, even one heartbeat on a monitor trace all plot this way: sharp onset, smoothing fall. What changes between them is how fast the spike rises and how long the fade runs, which is a real difference worth choosing rather than defaulting to the crispest-looking version — a kick's version runs lower and rounder than the sharp, held tone a struck tuning fork settles into.

Isn't a still image the wrong medium for something that only exists across time?

A waveform solves that by making time the horizontal axis instead of leaving it out.

Reading left to right along the print is reading forward through the hit exactly as it happened — the spike is early, the fade is later, in the same order and the same relative spacing they occurred in. It's a still image of an event, the same trick a Lissajous figure uses to hold a moving signal on a screen without needing to move.

Does it print well?

Yes — a single continuous line in one bright colour on a near-black ground is exactly what a waveform wants.

Cyan against near-black keeps the spike and the whole length of the decay visible at once without softening either; a gradient anywhere along that fade would start looking like a printing fault rather than a measurement. One ink is enough — the shape is doing all the work that colour would otherwise have to do on a bank of unevenly set channel faders.
