What moment does this print actually catch?

The moment of the test itself — not the bath being run, not the water afterward, just the instant the skin goes in and the answer arrives before a thought does.

There's no tap drawn, no thermometer, no second figure waiting nearby. The whole print is one motion caught mid-way: contact, and the small ripples that contact makes. It's closer to a still from a motion than a scene — which fits, because the thing being drawn is a reflex, not an event with a beginning and an end worth showing.

Why does the check happen at the elbow instead of the hand?

Because hands are the part of the body that spends the most time in water at every temperature, and skin that's constantly recalibrated stops being a reliable gauge — the elbow almost never touches anything, so it still reports accurately.

A hand that's washed dishes, run taps, and gripped a kettle all day has effectively been trained not to flinch at heat that would actually scald something more sensitive. The inside of the elbow is thinner-skinned and rarely tested against anything, which is exactly why it keeps reading temperature accurately long after the hand has stopped being able to.

Why does this work better as loose ink than as a tidy illustration?

Committing to the wash and bleed of the ink rather than tidying it into a clean vector line — a technique that's about touch and instinct reads wrong if it's rendered with hard, ruled edges.

The steam has to stay a few loose curls, not a decorative pattern. The ripples need the same loose hand — concentric but not mechanically even, the way real water actually moves once something has gone into it. A crisp, flat version of the same composition would say something closer to a diagram, and this isn't a diagram. It's a motion nobody had to think about making.

Do I need permission to print an arm testing water like this?

No — a bare forearm entering a pool of ripples is an ordinary gesture, not anybody's copyrighted image, and a design drawn fresh for this print doesn't borrow a specific photograph or another artist's illustration.

The only version that would need clearing is one lifted directly from an existing photo or a named illustrator's published piece, line for line. An original ink-and-wash rendering of a motion this common owes nobody anything.

Does the same idea work for other body-part checks people do without thinking?

Yes — testing with the back of the hand instead of the palm for something that shouldn't be too hot, or the inside of a wrist for the same reason, both run on the exact same logic: find the patch of skin that's least worn down by exposure and trust that one. What has to survive the swap is the single, close, unposed gesture — a whole figure washing a baby, or a full kitchen scene, loses the thing this print is actually about.

Isn't testing anything with an elbow a slightly odd thing to put on a shirt?

It reads as odd only until somebody recognises their own arm doing it — this is the kind of technique nobody was formally taught and everybody who does it just does, which is exactly the gap this print is aimed at.

Nobody sits a person down and explains elbow sensitivity before they start testing bathwater this way. It arrives as a motion copied once, early, from watching somebody else do it, the same way a watch ends up set two minutes fast without anybody currently doing it remembering deciding on the adjustment — and then it's just how the water gets checked from then on.

Does it print well?

Yes, provided the ink-and-wash bleed stays loose rather than getting cleaned up into flat vector shapes — the soft edge where the cobalt meets the grey underneath is most of what makes this recognisable as water rather than as a solid blue shape.

One ink against the garment is enough; a second colour would only compete with the wash effect instead of adding to it. Keep the ripple lines a few confident strokes rather than a tight ruled pattern — a limited, deliberately loose palette holds its character on fabric in a way a crisp, overworked version wouldn't.
