Haze isn't atmosphere, it's the drawing surface

In clean air a lantern makes a pool of light and nothing else. Haze fills the space between, so the beam itself becomes something you can aim and cross.

There's no lantern in the drawing and no floor for the light to land on. The beams are the entire subject.

What is this, exactly?

A cross-section of the one thing a lighting designer actually draws with: not the lamp, not the pool it makes, but the path in between.

In clean air, a lantern produces a bright patch where the light lands and nothing visible on the way there. Haze changes that completely — it fills the air with enough particles to scatter light sideways into the audience's eyes, which is the only reason a beam is ever something you can see rather than something you can only see the effect of.

Why does haze make an invisible beam visible?

Because light travelling through clean air doesn't reach your eye unless it's aimed straight at it, and haze gives it something to bounce off along the way.

Fill the air with fine particles and every one of them scatters a little of the beam sideways, including toward wherever the audience happens to be sitting. Multiply that by the length of the beam and the whole path lights up as a solid shape, not just its start and end points. What reads as atmosphere from the seats is, from the lighting rig's side, the medium the whole design is drawn in.

What makes a good arrangement of beams rather than a mess of them?

Crossing points and negative space, chosen the way a composition is chosen rather than left to chance.

A single beam is a line. Several at different angles, meeting at one or two points, is a composition with a focal area the eye settles on — which is exactly what a designer is doing when they cross beams on stage rather than firing them in parallel. Too many at once and the crossings stop reading as intersections and start reading as static.

A follow spot is the opposite job — one soft-edged beam, aimed at a moving performer rather than left static in the air — so a static crossing composition like this one belongs to the fixed rig, not to anything being chased.

Can a real venue's rig or a specific gel colour go on a shirt?

The physics of scattered light, and the act of crossing beams for effect, belong to nobody — that's how the medium behaves, not anyone's design.

A gel colour has its own numbering system, and that belongs to the maker who assigned it — the same ordinary licensing case as any other numbered system. A specific rig at a specific venue is different again and licensable if a real one is the point; here the angles and colours are simply what the composition needed.

Isn't this just a generic light-rays graphic?

Not once the beams behave like beams rather than like decoration.

A generic light-ray graphic glows uniformly and fades softly in every direction, because nobody drew it from a source. These beams narrow to a point at their origin, stay hard-edged along their length, and fade only as they travel away from the source that's implied but never shown, which is how a real beam through haze behaves whatever lens shaped it — a stepped Fresnel lens included — rather than a soft flourish borrowed from a stock library.

Does the same effect happen anywhere off a stage?

Anywhere air is dusty or damp enough and the light is strong enough — a window shaft full of dust, sun through trees on a misty morning.

Those are the same scattering behaviour at a much lower intensity, which is partly why the effect reads as familiar rather than technical the instant somebody sees a beam in haze for the first time. The stage version is just the deliberate, controllable version of something everybody has already seen for free.

Does it print well?

Yes, provided the fade is built as a small number of flat steps rather than a smooth gradient.

A true soft gradient goes grey and muddy on fabric long before it reaches full transparency, so each beam wants two or three discrete bands of decreasing opacity rather than a continuous blend. Pale blue and cream on a near-black ground keeps the crossings legible and the beams reading as light rather than as paint.
