A ruler that remembers a curve it isn't measuring

A flexicurve holds whatever shape it's bent into until someone rebends it — so drawn across a back it isn't measuring anything, it's still shaped like the last job.

It isn't lying flat. It's still bent to whatever it was tracing the last time anyone used it.

Why does it stay curved instead of springing back?

Because a flexicurve is built to hold a shape, not resist one.

Inside the rubber sleeve is a metal core — soft enough to bend by hand, stiff enough to stay put once bent. A spring-steel rule fights you the whole time and snaps back the second you let go; this tool does the opposite. Bend it to a waist, a collar, an armhole, and it keeps that exact curve until somebody deliberately straightens it out. The shape on this shirt isn't a pose. It's whatever the last curve was.

Why has the coating split in exactly one place?

Because that's where the bend was tightest.

Run a flexicurve through a shallow arc and the rubber barely notices. Force it round a sharp waist-to-hip transition, over and over, and the outer face of the coating stretches further each time than the inner face compresses — eventually it gives, right at the point that took the most work. The split isn't damage in general. It's a record of where this particular curve was hardest, the same way a knee wears through from repeated flex rather than one impact.

What do the worn tick marks actually tell you?

That the ruler was read from, not just bent.

A flexicurve carries printed centimetre marks along one edge so a pattern-maker can true a curve against a measurement instead of eyeballing it. Wear a printed edge against paper and a cutting mat for long enough and the ink goes first at the high points of use, leaving only a short stretch where the numbers still hold. What's legible now is less a measurement than a note on which section got looked at the most.

Whose curve is this, and does it need clearing?

Nobody's. A bent length of drafting tool has no owner.

The shape traces a body curve, not a person, a brand, or a pattern somebody sells — there's no name attached to a waist-to-hip line. If a design instead reproduced a specific commercial pattern piece, complete with a maker's printed grading marks, that would be a different, licensable request. A plain bent ruler with invented markings, like this one, belongs to nobody.

Does the same idea work for other tools that still hold the last job?

Yes, and it's a different kind of holding than a tool that simply gets worn down.

A flexicurve keeps an actual shape — bend it and it stays bent until reset. That's not the same as a handle worn smooth on one side from years of the same grip, which records use as texture rather than form. Both are a tool carrying evidence of its last job; one holds it as a shape you can trace, the other as a surface you can feel.

Do I need to know what a flexicurve is for this to work as a design?

No — read as a shape first, it's a long curling line with a break in it.

Knowing the tool adds a second layer: that the curve isn't decorative, it's a measurement someone took and then walked away from. But the print doesn't require the explanation to land, in the same way an old hem line still shows a few centimetres down whether or not you clock what it used to be. A shape that still looks tensioned, mid-bend, works on its own.

Does it print well at this scale?

Yes, if the line stays clean and the tick marks stay sparse.

The curve itself is a single confident shape with hard edges, which holds up well across a back panel — flat cream on a dark ground survives fabric better than a soft gradient would. The tick marks and the fragment of surviving lettering should stay light and occasional rather than dense; too many fine lines at this size fill in below the weave and read as a grey smear instead of a ruler's edge. One ink for the curve, one for the exposed metal patch, is enough.
